Its not often I get to stay in a nice hotel, so was looking forward to a good nights sleep in my charming Westin Annapolis room last night - all be it with 2 grumpy kids complaining about having to share a double bed. Anyway - 3am, the fire alarm kicks off. I had been merrily dreaming of something fabulous like a pair of Manolo Blahnik booties landing in my stocking this festive season, but was rudely awoken by the claxon & rather irritating digital voice of a lady insisting we all get up and leave our cozy nests.
Having thought about this for a few minutes and decided it was not going away, it was a mad grab for anything warm given we were headed outside to 23f chills at an ungodly hour. Luckily I was already rather glamorously bedecked in some J Crew pj pants and managed to grab a cashmere knit. My Maxmara down coat, although very much 'so last season' was a godsend, but couldn't help thinking how much more pulled together in a crisis I would have looked if was sporting a cute Gorsuch Bogner parka .This was also possibly the first time I have seriously looked enviously at Ugg clad feet and pondered whether they are indeed an investment that I have been putting off for too long, or if I still can't quite release them from the 'ugly' side of my fashion brain.
A quick check over the kids to ensure they were suitably attired and off we trotted looking for the nearest fire exit. On reaching the great outdoors it suddenly struck me that it wasn't so much what we were wearing that I should have been considering but other relevant ideas like
a) did I have my room key on me?
b) where was my cell phone?
c) ditto car keys/purse
Taking a quick straw pole of other suitably befuddled guests outside the hotel it appears that we were all blissfully unaware of what one might need during such an occurrence, as all had either one or none of the above. Had the place burned down it would have been a sorry state of affairs attempting to get my small brood home.
So the lesson learned then - Bogner coats are all well and good but during an emergency firstly ensure your beloved are with you and then think about the essentials should disaster strike.
