It's freezing today - not just that "Oh I'll be fine throwing on a coat" kind of cold, but that bitter chill that starts hurting your fingers after five minutes - note to self : perhaps should now move on from the Urban Outfitter fingerless arm warmers have been sporting recently to a pair of gloves that actually has fingers...So my plan of action to beat this chill is to start double layering my plethora of knits recently purchased in all shapes and sizes - let's face it, a girl can never have too much cashmere.
The layering thing might seem like a simple task, but in fact when you weigh up all the different textures and lengths of even the common cardi currently spilling off shelves in stores, then add the embellishment trend, not to mention cabling - there's a lot to play with and easy scope for a screw up if not using your noggin.
The layering trend has been around for a few seasons but a new tweak was spotted at Rachel Comey's 2010 runway show when she sent models trotting down the catwalk with layered cardigans
The key to this trend is to mix up your lengths and stick to thinner weight knits so that bulking doesn't become an issue. Try a crop lightweight cardigan over a longer boyfriend one. Pair an embellished/sequin knit with a basic preppy round neck. Experiment with color - mix some of this seasons purples with deeper cobalt blues or a pop of orange or lime. Or stay on the safe side mixing tone on tone - a taupe with a cream or an olive with a chocolate.
Try belting the first slimline knit at the waist and throw a boxy sequin embellished cardi over the top for a bit of daytime bling. J Crew are always masters at the cute sequin knit but hot on their heels are Ann Taylor Loft . For a more fashion forward take on mixing it up try some Alice & Olivia layers or a Free People cowl knit.
However you choose to layer - be bold, be bright and be brave.
