The first day of the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion week and I narrowly escaped ruining Olivia Palermo's (The City) grand ascent up the outer stairs of the Bryant Park Tents - luckily she was very gracious as I flummoxed my way past security and through the main doors (but if you do manage to spot a short person in her paparazzi shots who is possibly twice her girth - skinny does not even do her justice... that'll be me then!) - so celebs in place, the lights dimmed...
Ports 1961 is billed as a brand that caters for the world traveller - for me that conjured up crinkly separates that could be scrunched up and shoved in your bag as you aspire to the ever elusive capsule wardrobe idea before dashing to catch a flight. The designer, Tia Cibani however has other ideas.
The runway was awash with ethereal pieces in light pastels and corals mixed up with nudes and touches of metallic. The silhouettes were loose and flowing with an elegant drape or origami effect from the neck that would flatter most people, let alone the super skinny celebs attending. Fabulous layering of silks and satins gave the show an exquisitely airy feel with a Japanese vibe shown through kimono look pieces and wide bamboo/vinyl belting with quirky chopstick fixings.
There was something for everyone here -draping, architecture, embellishment, print, organza tops paired with slouchy harem pants or silk skirts, textured tunics and cover ups, but mostly there were dresses - fluid, transparent, dress it up or dress it down - the celebs that were present will find a tidy cache of staples for next seasons events. For the more common or garden punter - price points remain a tad high, but with an eagle eye for bargains, I noticed one celeb wearing a piece that can now be found on sale at zappos!
