Notes from a Stylist hits Costco

Blimey - who knew that supersize shopping could really mean supersize? For my virginal foray into Costco I was unprepared for the range of goods on sale. From new car tyres to treadmills, chick lit to chino's - whatever it is you're after - be sure you need it in supersize or don't bother coming.

Like a kid in a playground I was amazed by the size, variety and sheer unnecessary volume of everything. Sure I could do with a few gallons of Tide for the laundry but can I physically pick up the container and pour it into the washing machine - I don't think so! Maybe that's where the fitness equipment comes in and I'm missing the whole point?

Maybe Costco is a lifestyle choice - a one stop shop to meet all our needs. Eat the pack of 50 donuts in one sitting, throw up over your newly bought Calvin Klein marked down polo tee, nip to the laundry room to throw it in the wash - fail to manage to open the cleaning fluid container - bypass the washer and head for the basement where your running machine is neatly set up to work off all that flab you've just put on.

All this and only 1 shopping trip in 2 months - come to think of it, as more of a shopaholic kind of a girl, it's not really going to work for me....

  1. Really very funny! But you are not the target Costco shopper (small business owner, family, etc.) Each time I drive down the FDR Drive and see the "COSTCO COMING!" sign I have wondered why anyone living in NYC would (or could) shop at Costco. Where would you put all that bargain priced toilet paper? Down in your storage closet, if you were lucky enough to have one?
Believe it or not I have gotten a few nice bits of useful clothing at Costco, including knock-offs of Fresh Produce bathing suit cover-ups (they no longer carry these, alas) and some really lovely Hanes camisoles with built-in shelf bras that have worn like iron. Not your designer brands, perhaps, but good useful stuff.
    Cheers!

  3. Having popped into my local Costco last week I can add that included in my shopping trolley were a pair of silver Birkenstocks and 3 new pairs of kids crocs all at about 40% less than retail - not cutting edge fashion but useful essentials. Jo x
