5 'must haves' when walking the dog at the beach

Its early December which means the beach is open for dogs again for the winter here in sunny CT. All very well and good, but what's a girl to do when it's been a full couple of seasons since the last beach/dog walking session.

It's not like Blighty here - no pac-a-mac and bobble hat will do when its 32f and blowing a hooly. So with the initial burst of enthusiasm to dash down the beach put on hold, it was time to root through the deepest darkest cupboards that have been steadily accumulating smelly boots and rotting ski socks since the last cold snap. Half an hour later and I seem to have forgotten why I put my nose in this dank den of dirt - there's a yoga mat - ah yes that was my must do yoga every morning phase, a pair of MBT trainers - that'll be the walk 4 miles in an hour and see the weight slip off phase - on the plus side they did make me 3" taller which was a win win whilst walking. By the time I've found and discounted the sailing shoes - thoughts of doing a leg of the round the world race were quickly dashed when sea sickness became a sticking issue, but at least I had the shoes at the ready - it was time to regroup.

What do you really need for the beach in winter? On any given day definitely a pair of waterproof and warm shoes that you won't be wearing later for cocktails. My Merrell's are currently working the waterproof yet fur tipped trend. A windproof vest to keep out the chill - have got my eye on this Patagonia micro fibre vest for the pre snow walking sessions, with a warmer back up of this fab Bogner Parka for when the big chill hits. The final essentials are a hat with enough techno savvy to keep your bonce warm whilst keeping the rest of you looking cool. Gloves that keep the serious frost bite away - and if you're like my sis-in-law, who's fingers freeze up whilst searching for ice for her Mojito in the freezer, then consider silk glove liners too.

Finally don't forget the obligatory poop bags if you have taken your trusty canine with you and if its one of those teeny tiny 'carry it in your bag' kind of dogs you might consider the divine Kate Spade dog sweater - but then that might throw your sartorial choices into a whole other tail spin and you'll have to consider how to dress to match your pooch...
