The key to this summers party dressing is the maxi dress - or so the media would have us believe. Now as a hip yet 'age appropriate' stylist who may not like to admit, but for the sake of the planet is willing to, that she saw this trend the first time round - the question of summer party attire is manifesting into a dress dilemma.
A Nieves Lavi silk butterfly print maxi is itching to be worn once more (to be fair it should be marked as a crime against fashion not to wear that beautiful piece another time). But sadly its empire line leaves me wondering whether I will have to spend the night fending off pregnancy rumours - why go to the trouble of all those Gwyneth Paltrow style crunches this year if in one fell swoop I am pronounced with child due to my garb.
In the end I opt for a cute grey silk calypso dress, some sparkly yellow Choo's and a yellow silk Kate Spade clutch. Arriving at the party a sea of maxi clad women merrily bob before me. There's everything from graphic prints to florals to color blocking going on. The palettes are vivid and fun but en mass it all looks a little samey. Thankfully a fashion designer buddy sidles up to me in a short black pleated number - I'm guessing one of her own from the forthcoming runway show - at least I will know what's going to be on all these ladies next summer....
So the best dressed? Why its the Gucci clad friend who wafts by wearing a cobalt blue chiffon cover up. WOW is the only word that springs to mind. She has spotted the essence of the vibe this season - its the full on 70's glam abandon - Halston in its heyday. I'm wondering if the rest of Stepford is quite ready for that though......
