Why is black the new black...again

Why is it that black remains the staple neutral of the New Yorkers' wardrobe?

For years  this drab & draining hue has been the backbone of a serious girls weaponry in the daily style onslaught. How else to portray that chic but thrown together look that only a long time city girl can achieve. Yet if you ask any self respecting image consultant you will be on the receiving end of the mantra "black is so draining". "It makes you look like 4am and not 4pm. It adds to the bags under your eyes & shadows under your chin."

Just this week a friend and I took a well meant but badly timed power walk before our young ones class graduation at prep school. Had I been a local, I would have known in a snap that my attempts at channeling this seasons heavily promoted 'charcoal is the new neutral' trend were ill conceived. As we emerged from our 4 miler, having been caught by the recent unseasonal downpours, and suddenly noticing that it seems a 5 year old graduation celebration is something that one dresses to the nines for... my grey workout look just didn't pass muster. Not even the fact that my skinny knit top was Burberry with this seasons pleating detail could save the day when compared to my friends correct sartorial choice of head to toe black. With a swish of her pony tail she was accepted into the elegant crowd without a second glance whilst i remained resolutely colorless in the background.

A quick peek at the trend reports for  could have saved my dilemma, as the catwalks had been awash with the new new black. My self proclaimed 'city girl' walking partner had merely out gunned me in the age old rule of New York sartorial elegance. From here on in I plan to ignore the mantra that suggests that this particular neutral does nothing for me.
